Realtors vs. Real Estate Agents: What’s the Difference?
After seeing the terms realtors and real estate agents used interchangeably, you may have wondered if there is any difference between the two. Although both must be licensed to sell real estate, not every real estate agent is a Realtor. So, what’s the difference?
What is a Real Estate Agent?
In order to best understand the difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor, you must first know exactly what a real estate agent is. A real estate agent is someone who is licensed to assist in the buying and selling of properties. An agent can also choose between specializing in residential or commercial properties, and whether they would like to focus on being a listing, rental, or buyersbuyer’s agent.
In order to become licensed, real estate agents must take coursework and pass a state exam. Particular requirements for each state vary, but all agents must become educated about state and national real estate laws and practices. Agents must also renew their license every one to two years and typically continue their education to stay up to date on new policies and procedures.
What is a Realtor?
The main factor that separates a Realtor from a real estate agent is that a Realtor is an active member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the largest trade association in the U.S. The term “Realtor®” was created as a way to distinguish members of the NAR from non-members. The title is also trademarked as a way to protect the term from improper use.
