Hot Home Design Trends to Consider

Whether you are building a new home or remodeling an existing structure, you probably want to consider including a few of the latest elements in hot home design trends.

Not every trend is something you should follow. It is best to build your home according to your own taste and style, but including a few of these popular trends can increase your home’s appeal should you decide to sell in the near future.

Here are some of the hot design trends to consider:

• Vaulted ceilings in at least one room. Vaulted ceilings are a structurally interesting way to change the appearance of a room and give it light, air, and openness. This architectural feature has been traditionally used in two-story spaces, like a great room, but today the “open ceiling” is a useful tool in less vertically expansive spaces, such as a dining room in an open floor plan.
  
  
• Metals in the kitchen. Stainless steel is still popular, but homebuilders are seeing a rise in demand for even more metal, from cabinets to range hoods. Copper is the biggest trend right now and can be used in cabinet pulls, lighting, as well as the range hood.
  
  
• Mixing black and white. One big trend is black trim around windows, doors and even accent walls. Combined with white mantels over fireplaces and starch white ceilings it makes for interesting, elegant contrasts.
  
  
• Kitchens as the “great room”. Today’s kitchens are for hanging out, and some even offer space for a little office nook to get work done. Spacious kitchen islands, banquettes, better technology, and integrated offices give families space to hang out, work, and dine in one central space.
  
  
• Home libraries, or a room called “the study”. These have made a comeback and offer a retreat from screen time as well as beautiful book shelves.
  
  
• A home office. Many people telecommute at least part of the work week. The line between work and home keeps blurring, which has led to an increased emphasis on dedicated work spaces that are stylish and functional.
  
  
• Open floor plans. This has been popular for a while now and does not seem to be going anywhere. Being able to see and speak with family in the living room while preparing dinner in the kitchen is something most families have come to expect and enjoy.

While some trends will come and go, it is wise to choose a few modern design elements to include in your new home or remodel. It makes the space feel up-to-date, modern and fresh, while making it distinctly your own.
